Contact the original creditor and ask them to fix the problem and also tell the collection agency. You might also want to send the collection agency a letter requesting verification of the debt.

You need to contact the Original Creditor about this situation. Sounds to me that it is past due the time it takes to notify the collection agency and the time it takes the agency to send you out a letter asking for payment is gonna be no less than 2 weeks. For this to happen the original creditor would've sent it to them right away instead of waiting for any insurance or payment from you.

Don't worry about whether it's legal. It's a mistake. Have the company fix the mistake and the collector problem goes away.
