Why do businesses turn to collection agencies to handle their collections? Is it becuase they dont have the time to deal with collections themselves? Is it not that big of a deal and there for they can sell the debt to someone else?Or is it because if there are any illegal practices the business can hide behind the fact that the collection agency was the one collecting?

I am trying to get my credit in better shape so that I can buy a house. I made deals with a couple of collection agencies. I told them I would pay in full if they would agree to take the items off of my report. They did. However, there is a collection agency that is really being stubborn about working with me. I also told them that I would pay in full if they would take it off my report. They said that they could not do that. How can I get them to agree to take it off my credit report if I pay in full? My credit went bad when I divorced. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Michigan does require out of state collection agencies to be bonded and licensed to collect in Michigan but how can I find out if one is? The collection agency is not required to tell me. Is the only way to find out to just wait until Monday and call the State Attorney Generals office?
